Probably the most popular tourist attraction in the Bicol region is the Mayon Volcano, known for its “Perfect” conical shape, its the landmark of the province of Albay. Next to it is Ligñon Hill (pronounced as lin-yon) another popular land form, said to have the best view of Mayon (unless you’re a hardcore landscape photographer), situated at the town of Daraga. It has a panoramic view of the Mt. Mayon, the town of Daraga and Legazpi City.
After having a brief rest and lunch at Camarines Sur, that’s after a non-stop 8-hour drive from Manila, I’m back on my drivers seat and went to Albay Province. Before going to Lignon Hill, we briefly stopped at Cagsawa Ruins, another popular tourist spot, to meet our friends that went ahead of us and take a few snaps.
Cars are not allowed to go up from 5am-6pm, so I parked the car and hike the hill on foot. It looks easy since the road is paved, but after 10 minutes of walking, I can literally squeeze the sweat out of my shirt, lugging around camera gear, lacking of sleep and driving for the past 10 hours doesn’t help. Not long after, we saw the airport runway (literally a stone-throw away) and a high vantage view of Legazpi City. Although the hike is very tiring, a lot of interesting things and people can be seen.
Upon reaching the peak 15 minutes later, we sit and grab bottles of refreshing drinks while looking at the entire, unobstructed view of Mount Mayon…. Well not really as the volcano is covered with thick clouds.
It is usually best to take photos of Mt. Mayon early in the morning because there’s less clouds or usually low enough to reveal the awesome crater releasing thick white smoke.
We sat there for a couple of minutes just looking at the majestic sun setting against the Mayon foreground. The cool breeze blowing, sitting with your love one, sharing the magnificent view the Mayon landscape has to offer is such a relaxing experience.
On our way back, the cars and motor bikes are allowed to come up, which kinda sucked. Hopped in the car, again, sweating profusely, we drive back to town.
If you’re planning to go to Lignon hill here’s my tips:

Hi,
My friends and I are set to go to Legaspi City as our jump off point to Donsol, Sorsogon this May.
Someone suggested that we could have lunch or dinner at the Lignon Hills.
Is there really a restaurant there where we could eat?
Appreciate any suggestions
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
When we’re there, there are only small food stands that sells soft drinks and snacks. If I can recall correctly, there are some “turo-turo” style restaurant.
It’s better to have your lunch in Legazpi City proper or even in Daraga.
Hope this helps.

Hi Grace,
Good thing, I have an officemate who grew up in Legazpi. He said, from the main highway, you can board a jeep with an “A” or “B” sign, these jeepneys will take you to near the foot of Lignon Hill, then you’ll walk towards the top.
Hope that helps, Jeff.

Hello people. My family and I (7 pax) are going to Legaspi from April 6-9. We will arrive Legaspi at 6:00am on April 6 and we will be renting a van for 1 day to take us around and bring us to Donsol late in the afternoon. Can you suggest where to go to maximize the use of the van? Which of the places below we can take public transpo and which should i include in the itinerary for the van?
1. Mayon Skyline Park
2. Cagsawa Ruins
3. Daraga Church
4. Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave
5. Lignon Hill
6. Legaspi Museum
7. Mayon Volcano National Park
Are there any other places you can suggest?
We will be back in Legaspi on April 8 lunch time and where else can we go by public transportation?
Would be looking forward to hearing from you guys. Thank you
